In the Revolutionary War he served as a captain in Chatham county in the "Loyal Militia of Randolph and Chatham Counties" under Colonel Fanning in North Carolina and fought for the English king instead of the Revolutionaries. Several stories about him have been passed down. One says he was a "giant devoted to the Church of England". Another says he was a "pegleg cobbler". Another says he died gloriously in battle. Yet another says he was captured at Cane Creek and executed by "Whitehorse Harry" Lee's Calvary. He fought at Lindley's Mill, twenty six miles from Hillsborough (Orange) North Carolina. On 09-13-1781 he was at the Battle of Betli's Bridge on Drowning Creek under ambush by General Butler. The Deatons were old English colonists, having been in America since the 1640's.
