He enlisted in Liberty (Clay) Missouri on August 31, 1950 instead of re-enrolling into his sophomore year at Park College (later University). His address at the time was 113 Cypress St. in Excelsior (Clay) Missouri. During his time in the navy he received the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was stationed at the Millington Naval Air Station in Memphis (Shelby) Tennessee. When he was discharged from the navy on June 17, 1954 (three months before his first child was born), Dan received $118.63 and listed his permanent address as 1408 LeFlor St. in Memphis. Dan signed this discharge form and used "Dan" instead of "Daniel" and wrote his middle name as "Merideth" which is what is on his birth certificate. Most of the descendants of Dan, along with several of his long-time friends and work associates, were present. Naming a part of a highway after someone is a rarely bestowed honor.
