: 1812 , Age:23y1m12d, Missouri, Role:Lt., Served as a lieutenant under Captain Callaway in the war against the Indians in Missouri. Callaway was killed because he refused to listen to the advice of Lt. Riggs. Thus, Riggs became the commander of the rangers troops and helped the men retreat back to their fort. Lt. Riggs was well known for his bravery yet made good decisions to protect his men and himself. After one skirmish with the Indians, chief Black Hawk was quite impressed with the actions of Lt. Riggs saying that the lieutenant seemed to be the only one of his troop that knew what he was doing. Black Hawk said he would be quite pleased for the opportunity to shake hands with Lt. Riggs. High praise! Much details about some of his military encounters with Indians are given in several books although later books after reoeat the same stories of earlier books. : 1831-1832, Age:42y1m12d, Role:general, Black Hawk War of 1831-32, For the Black Hawk War (named after the Sauk Indiah chief that started the war), Jonathan had been promoted to general. Another ancestor, Cyrus Douglass of Illinois, also fought in this war. When General Riggs died a couple of years after the war, the news was announced in newspapers all over the eastern U.S.
