: 1778 , Age:42y 0m 0d, Chatham county North Carolina, Role:buyer, obtained 700 acres Since William fought for the British during the war, half of his land was confiscated under the so-called "Confiscation Acts" passed by the state assembly in 1777. The siezed half was auctioned to the public by the sheriff of Chatham at Puttsborough on 05-10-1782. 300 acres were sold to John Powers and 200 acres to William Needham. The property was located near the junction of Chatham, Moore and Randolph counties. His son Nathan disposed his own claim of the property by 1786-1787.

: , Role:captain, army, Revolutionary War, He was sometimes called "The Tory". In the Revolutionary War he served as a captain in Chatham county in the "Loyal Militia of Randolph and Chatham Counties" under Colonel Fanning in North Carolina and fought for the English king instead of the Revolutionaries. Several stories about him have been passed down. One says he was a "giant devoted to the Church of England". Another says he was a "pegleg cobbler". Another says he died gloriously in battle. Yet another says he was captured at Cane Creek and executed by "Whitehorse Harry" Lee's Calvary. He fought at Lindley's Mill, twenty six miles from Hillsborough (Orange) North Carolina. On 09-13-1781 he was at the Battle of Betli's Bridge on Drowning Creek under ambush by General Butler. The Deatons were old English colonists, having been in America since the 1640's. Many remained loyal to the British Crown, North Carolina being partial to the king more than any other colony.
