He started out by handling freight for 50 cents a week. At ages 12 and 13 he started learning telegraphy. With hard work he made his way up to office boy making 12 cents an hour. At age 17 he was training to take over the job of his ailing grandfather E.J. When Cluett retired to Postville in 1969, he, his father, and his grandfather had put in a combined total of 135 years of service to the CM&SP Railroad covering a period of almost one hundred years.

His several letters included numerous articles, memrobelia and vivid, lengthy and very interesting descriptions of many of the various family members. Because of his arthritis, Cluett suffered through much physical paid while typing these letters. But his love of sharing the family history spurred him on.

Cluett loved making grandfather clocks, a hobby he took up a few years after his wife died. All of the family would pass around a list at Christmas and around Cluett's birthday so they could check off which tools they would get for him. He accumulated quite a collection of tools over the years. He made 142 grandfather clocks over the years using his many tools. Cluett passed his knowledge of making grandfather clocks onto his son Jim.
