General

Evon was an artist. She played the violin, organ and piano and also sang.

In 1929, while Edwin "E.L." Wilson was in Sioux City to set up a new store for Cook Paint, he met a local resident, Burton Searls. Burton would stop by to visit E.L. and ask him questions about his business. Once while they were talking, E.L. mentioned that he was looking for an artist to do the advertising for the new store. Burton told E.L. that he had just the right person for the job. Burton immediately telephoned Evon, who was home making grape juice as she was working for the · California Fruit Growers Exchange. Burton told her to drop what she was doing and come down there for an interview. She did and got the job. Three months later she and E.L. were married. A few months later, while visiting Excelsior Springs (Clay) Missouri to set up yet another new Cook Paint store, E.L. and Evon decided that that is where they wanted to settle. So on May 16, 1930 they moved there and soon started their own paint store. They owned and operated this store until 1966. · Evon was a resident of Excelsior Springs for nearly sixty years. This made her one of the city's longest residents.
