Job
: ?, Age:82y 6m 20d, Akron, Plymouth county, Iowa, Role:owner, In 1891 Newell and Milton moved to western Iowa and opened several lumber yards. Newell's Moore Lumber Company [later the Akron Lumber Co.] was in Akron. Newell had a hard time raising the credit to purchase his first trainload of lumber -- about five train-car loads. However, the train ran into a flood during delivery and was lost. There was no insurance in those days, so Newell was out the entire cost. Somehow, Newell was able to raise the money to purchase a second trainload of lumber. He worked all day and night unloading the lumber and coal as he was determined to get his business started. Often, he came home only for breakfast and supper as he could not afford to hire any help. His only means of curbing his hunger when he skipped all meals was a bottle of whiskey he kept in his back pocket. Needless to say, he was often half-drunk, but he kept on working. His hard work paid off. Twenty years later he was able to retire in 1911 and was financially comfortable. Mr. E. Zieglar took over as the manager and Newell's son, Orlan, became the assistant manager. Later, Orlan's daughter, Harriett, and her husband, Bob Tucker, took over the business. Moore Lumber Yards was incorporated on 08-01-1905 with stockholders of: Newell S. Moore, Milton A. Moore and Fred D. Moore. Newell's son Orlan C. started working there in 1906 while attending high school. In August 1912 Ed Ziegler became the manager and a stockholder. As of September 1925 the stockholders included: Ed Ziegler, Orlan Moore, F.A. [?Foster or Fred] Post, F.W. [?Foster] Post, Stan D. Post and E.W. Post. After Ed died, his stock was purchased by William H. Rademacher who sold it to Orlan and Stan in 1945. In 1946, Robert Tucker joined the company. He and his father-in-law, Orlan, ran the entire operation until they hired their employee, Lloyd Meyers, in 1951. The original buildings included the office and storage building on the corner of highway 12 and Dakota Street and the large north shed next to Rod's Ford dealership. As the business grew buildings were added including acquisition of the old railroad depot for storing roofing material and insulation. Before the lumber yard was build, the ground was a tobacco farm.
Fred Post was found in two censuses: 1920 census in Akron, Plymouth county, Iowa with the Family of Fred Post, Fred's name appeared in the 1925 obituary of ancestor Newell S. Moore.
