General

Cluett thought Silas "...was the best uncle a fellow could have". Cluett was only about seven and a half years younger than Silas. Silas died during a operation performed on his ruptured appendix by two Sioux City surgeons. The operation was performed on the dining room table in the home of his sister, Mrs. Etta Moore Beck. Her home was next door to her parents' home. Cluett was present at Silas's operation and remembers how Newell, upon hearing that his son had just died, pulled · back his long white beard and kissed Silas on the forehead. According to his obituary, Silas had been in delicate health for some time suffering from an internal malady. Because of it, an operation was deemed necessary but he was not strong enough to survive it.
