His parents are listed as Daniel Halstead and Elizabeth Schuiler and the sponsors are listed as David Schuiler andAnn Perdon. From the records of the U.S. Dutch Reformed Church in Selected States, 1639-1989 volume II Book 34 is, on page 190, the baptism of James Halstead on Jan.10, 1775 in New York City. In 1798 James began keeping a personal ledger of business transactions. He continued to make entries until 1831. All of the entries give the amounts in pounds, sterling and pence. His entries are followed by many dated from 1858 to 1865. They were probably made by his son-in-law, Gilbert Searls, and/or Gilbert's oldest son, Daniel James Searls. In addition to the business transactions, the ledger also contains recipes, home remedies for both humans and animals, and notices of family births and deaths. This ledger is now in then possession of Darrell B. Searls.

TO FIND: Immigrant Ancestors, Birth Place (in New York, possibly on Long Island)
Several things are known about James once he began moving in New York and Ohio. His origins remains a mystery though it appears he was early in life on Long Island.
A James Halstead born 1726 on Long Island, died about 1786, married about 1765 to Elizabeth Teed. This came from a book of Halsteads in New York and New Jersey.
A James Halstead born 1726 on Long Island died 1786 son of James, he m1.1751, m2.ca1765 to Elizabeth Teed, was a Revolutionary soldier, suspected of Tory activities and appeared before the Albany county safety commission several times. Had sons Timothy and James.
There was a Nathan Halstead of Concord Massachusetts who died ca1643.
By 1657 there were two immigrants named Halstead in America. They were: Henry born ca1626 came to Elizabeth City county VA 1651 then to Norfolk 1663 he died by 05-15-1685, and, Jonas bapt.02-23-1611 Halifax (York) England came to Hempstead, Long Island, New York 1644 then to Oyster Bay ca1660 then to Jamaica, New York 1667, d.1683 Hempstead.
Many James Halsteads are list on RootsWeb at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~lzrslong/genealogy/b1917.htm However, none have been able to be tied to this ancestor James Halstead.
See https://www.geni.com/people/James-Halstead-I/5446084137420119586 for a James Halstead who was born on Long Islanad about 1700 and died in Westchester county on 1786-10-03. Right name, right counties! Three generations early. In fact, this Halstead line goes back into the 1100's in England.
Another James Halstead (1726-1786) was born on Long Island and died in Albany. For his information, see https://www.geni.com/people/James-Halstead-II/6000000001407140413
