Obit: 1864, Age:87y11m15d, Zanesville, Muskingum county, Ohio, From his obituary (per the original in the 1999 possession of Mary Paskevich of California):
Mathew Wilson Sr. died 12-29-1864 in Zanesville, Ohio. He had been from early life a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was born in Huntingdon county Pennsylvania and was brought up in the old- fashioned ways of Scottish Presbyterianism. Before coming to Ohio, he had held county offices and had been a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature for several years. In some instances, he had been elected by a large majority, contrary to his own wishes. He may have also been a ruling elder in his church in Pennsylvania. He came to Zanesville in 1838 and established himself as an iron merchant which he continued for many years until he retired for health reasons. Mathew gradually sank away with scarce any illness except for the feebleness of old age. Upon having, in May 2022, the Zanesville Public Library staff check the Zanesville newspaper around the two possible death dates for Mathew, they were unable to find his obituary in the newspaper. The above-mentioned obituary that Mary Parkevich said she had must have been from a newspaper other than the Zanesville Courier where the obituary of Hannah Wilson was found.

The information appears correct although only a single federal census is given as the source.
In J.S. Africa's book on the history of counties of Huntingdon and Blair, was the following entry on page 221: Christian Stover lived further up MillCreek, at one time the owner of Pridmore Mills, and after him came Matthew Wilson who carried on · when and where did he die the mills a number of years and reared sons named John, Benjamin, Matthew, and William. A daughter became the wife of Leonard G. Kessler, who now [1892] lives in Philipsburg, Centre county PA.[Not mentioned is daughter Mary who was still living]. And on page 223 was the following entry under the Brady township: The water power of Mill Creek was utilized before the Revolutionary War to operate a small grist mill for Joseph Pridmore. It stood near where is now Mill Creek Furnace. Christian Stover made some improvements. Matthew Wilson was a later property owner and from him it passed into the hands of the furnace company, about 1838. From the book created for the Mill Creek township's bicentennial celebration in 1978: The town of Mill Creek was named for the stream that it is located on. The stream, or creek, was the source of power for many mills in the settlement years of the late 1700's and much of the 1800's. Joseph Pridmore built the first, a small grist mill on the creek a few hundred yards from the mouth. The stream became known as Pridmore's Mill Creek. Later, it was just known as Mill Creek. A ball park now stands next to where Pridmore's mill was. A later owner, Christian Stover, improved and enlarged it to make a combination grist mill and saw mill. Matthew Wilson bought it in 1803 and rebuilt it to an impressive building. The E.A. Green company bought it in 1838 and operated it for over 50 years. The building stood until 1914 when it was torn down.

The list is at: https://www.huntingdonhistoryresearchnetwork.net/historic-documents/petitions-for-the-formation-of-huntingdon-county/ county-petitions-from-huntingdon-barree-hopewell-dublin-shirley-townships/. However, the ancestral Mathew Wilson would have been age 10 when Huntingdon was formed in 1787.

At least six Mathew/Matthew Wilsons were born in Pennsylvania then lived, and died, in Ohio in the mid-1800's. Listed below, and, except for the first one who died in 1844, they are all found in the 1850 and/or 1860 censuses for Ohio:
- Matthew (1755-1844) of Bristol (Morgan) Ohio, his information seems to be blended in familysearch.org with the the below Matthew, unknown where he is buried (see https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GCCL-YR3)
- Matthew (1777-?1864) of Zanesville (Muskingum) Ohio, Ancestor but unable to find any end-of-life documents in Muskingum county, and, uncertain if he really is buried in Greenwood in Zanesville). This Matthew Wilson should be made into a separate profile in familysearch.org by taking from the above Matthew of Morgan county everyone except his wives, the children of the two Davids, James J. and William Duffield (of South Carolina), and, his father the Rev. Matthew Wilson. Note that the marriage record of James J. Wilson to Elizabeth Coleman is on record in Morgan county so he is of that family.
- Matthew (1795-1864) of Champaign county Ohio, married Hester about 1830, his will probated in Champaign in April 1864 (see https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/K2JL-RNV)
- Matthew (1799-1861) of Frazeysburg (Muskingum) Ohio, married Nancy in 1819, buried in Cody Cemetery with his family (see https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L523-HMX)
- Matthew (1799-1881) of Franklin (Warren) Ohio, married Eleanor in 1827, buried in Dicks Creek Cemetery in Franklin (see https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/99N3-ZDH)
- Matthew (1800-after 1850) of Summit county Ohio, married Juliette about 1829 (see https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6955-WS?i=25&cc=1401638 &personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMX7C-MPN)

...... B O T T O M L I N E for ancestor Matthew ......
***************************************************************
Per a total lack of civil documentation, it is undetermined when and where Matthew was born, died and was buried.
Here is a recap of what is known about him:
* He likely was born in Mill Creek (Huntingdon) Pennsylvania, and, per the 1850 and 1860 censuses, was born sometime between 1776 and 1780.
* The obituary of his wife Hannah says her husband is an iron merchant and that he survived Hannah
* A 70 year old Matthew Wilson is in Zanesville per the 1850 census and is called an Iron Merchant
* An 84 year old Matthew Wilson is in Zanesville per the 1860 census living with a 40 year old Ellen (whereas his daughter Ellen, who never married, was age 58 in 1860 and was still living in Muskingum county)
* He was probably a member of the Presbyterian church because most of his Pennsylvania and Ohio family members were. However, the Zanesville Presbyterian church has no records going back into the 1860's.
* He moved his family from Huntingdon county to Muskingum county sometime around 1838. He and his son Matthew began appearing in Muskingum county land deeds about that time until Matthew the father likely had died then son Matthew sold his Zanesville home in 1868 and moved to Xenia. Deeds exist in Huntingdon of Mathew selling property in 1838.
* Matthew first married in Pennsylvania to Mary McLane/McClain, four children, she likely died birthing child #4
* Matthew and Hannah had five children in PA: Benjamin F (1808-1892), Matthew M (1810-?1860's Zanesville), William (1812-1876 Delavan), Mary Jane (1816-1910 Washington Court House) and Susannah (1818-1893 Philipsburg)
* There was a Matthew Wilson (1799-1861) who is buried in Cody Cemetery a bit northwest of Zanesville, this Matthew was married in 1819 to Nancy Courtney. His estate inventory likely is the one that is on file in the Muskingum County probate office dated October 1, 1861. This Matthew is not the ancestor.
Here are the missing pieces of information for Matthew the ancestor:
* Beyond the 1849 obituary of his wife, and, Matthew in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, no other documentation exists about Matthew Sr. for his time in Muskingum county Ohio
* Since Zanesville's Greenwood Cemetery lost its pre-1895 records in a fire, and, apparently Matthew's headstone has eroded enough to be unreadable, Greenwood cannot say for sure that Matthew and Hannah are buried there.
* Cousin Mary Paskevick (deceased 2003) said in a 1999 letter that she had seen the obituary of Matthew and sent the dates for Matthew's birth (1777-01-14) and death (1864-12-28). However, the library cannot find the obituary for Matthew. Two newspapers in Muskingum in the 1860's -- the Courier (on newspapers.com) and the Signal (microfiche).
* Unable to locate a death certificate for Matthew
* The Muskingum County Probate Clerks office is unable to locate a will or probate or estate inventory for Matthew.
* Until the source of the information that Mary Paskevich had is found, Matthew's final days in Zanesville remains a "disappeared from history mystery"!

The end-of-life of Mathew is somewhat of a mystery. A seemingly existing obituary that has yet to be found. A no-longer-readable or even findable cemetery headstone. Probate would have occurred just before the county kept such records. Multiple people with his same name and lived in western Ohio about the same time he lived.
