General
Because two of the children of John and Hannah are ancestors, this makes John and his wife Hannah "double ancestors". They actually appear on two different branches of the family tree. The same can be said for Hannah's parents.
From the Coxsackie NY Library (1987 Hope Farm Press, originally 1884 by J.B.Beers and Co): Page 370: Early settlers of New Baltimore included John Garret, Jonathan Miller, Timothy Green, Charles and Hallet Titus, David Halstead, Robert Palmer, Edmund Powell, Noah Wheeler, John Smith, the Bedells, the Searles, the Travis's and others. Many of these migrated from Dutchess County and in their religious sentiments were Quakers. New York became the eleventh state in 1788 when it ratified the U.S. Constitution. In 1825 New York opened the Erie Canal. In 1831 New York's first railroad was opened and it ran from Albany to Schenectady.

Robert Searls born about 1640 Dorchester England, married 1660 Deborah _______ came about 1640 to Dorchester Massachusetts. Robert Searles admitted an inhabitant of Dorchester Massachusetts on 06-09-1662, his wife died 03-02-1713/4 in Dorchester. Robert was the town clerk for many years in Dorchester. He died 02-07-1717 in Dorchester, 7 kids: Nathaniel born 06-09-1662 Dorchester married 1694 Sarah Rogers daughter John and Elizabeth and great granddaughter of Thomas Rogers of the Mayflower; Salter (a family name carried down in descendants for several generations) born 06-26-1664 died 04-08-1690; Ebson/Edna born 02-24-1669 died young; Robert born 07-02-1671 Dorchester married 12-04-1695 to Rebecca ______ who died 05-17-1761 age 85 [born 1676]; Ebson born 03-18-1674; Deborah born 04-04-1677; and, Jabez born 03-13-1679 married Thankful Toplift. Other pioneers named Searls, Searl, and Searles had preceded Robert to the New World: John Searles of Springfield Massachusetts by 1637. Philip Searl of Roxbury Massachusetts. A John Searls married Elizabeth on 09-19-1780 in the Church of Christ in Salem (Westchester) New York. This John may be a nephew to ancestor John. A Lott Searls and Martha Miller, executrix of the estate of Silas Miller, of Bedford (Westchester) New York, sold real estate to Lemuel Light on 12-29-1787. John's father may have been John. The father John supposedly had at least three sons: Adam (who had six children), John (the ancestor), and Caleb. John the ancestor also had sons named Adam and Caleb so their information may be getting confused. According to research in New York by Patricia (Searles) Elden, John's father was John who was born about 1706 and died after 1736 and was the son of John. A list of North Castle residents who enlisted as soldiers in the War of the Rebellion included a Daniel M. Searles and a Benjamin D. Searles. The town of Millwood NY (a hamlet in New Castle NY) was originally called Sarlesville. From 1814 to 1993 there was a building called Sarles' Tavern. It was on the national historic register beginning in 1973 but the building burned in 1993. The 1994 Miss America, Vanessa Williams, grew up in Millwood NY. In extreme northwestern North Dakota is the town of Sarles. In 1910 the population was 28. The town was named after the ninth governor of North Dakota, Elmore Yocum Sarles. He was born 1859 in Wonewoc WI and died 1929 in Hillsboro ND.
