Five main objectives for this trip:
1. Photograph the campus signs at Lindenwood University in St. Charles -- that completes all colleges in Missouri
2. Attend the open house meeting of the Uptown Toastmasters club in Springfield -- 1st time to this club, my 129th club to visit
3. Do some family research in Springfield for the Deatons and Buhrs
4. Do some family research in Columbia for the Riggs and Hicks
5. See my friend Jan who recently moved back to the Springfield area
MISSOURI: One college, two family history towns
MISSED VISITING:
--Ozark Genealogical Society library in Springfield -- heard there is little there that the public library does not have
--Boone County Genealogy Society library -- I was ready to head home and felt I had exhaused the materials available for the county
--State Historical Society in Columbia -- learned about this at the Columbioa public library
OBSERVATIONS: Some observations made while traveling in this area:
- Going from Kansas City to Clinton drivers can do 70 MPH. Clinton is 45 MPH with three traffic lights. Then, the rest of the way to
Springfield is only 65 MPH.
- Springfield certainly has many PT Cruisers going around town. Does not say much for the residents there for them to continue driving
the world's UGLIEST vehicle ever made!!!
- At the Riggs Presbyterian Church cemetery (sometimes called Union Cumberland Cemetery) I was unable to find any headstones for Riggs
or Hicks, but, many headstones are unreadable. I did note many headstones with the surnames Riley, Graves, Sims and Seymour.
The Bests:
- Weather for February 28 and March 01 was pleasant -- 60 and low 70's
- New Sentra did well -- started the trip with the odometer reading 71 miles
- Always interesting to see trees before they get their spring leaves
- No road construction slow-downs (except for about two minutes along an 11-mile stretch on I-44)
- Finally got to drive I-44 between Rolla and St. Louis
The Worsts:
- (nothing)
The Totals:
- Miles Driven: 667
- Driving: 11 hours in 2 days
- States: 1 -- Missouri
- Major Universities (to make 510 visited): 1 - Lindenwood University
- Pictures Taken: 10 (zero deleted)
- National Parks: Zero (279 visited)
- New Ancestors Found: None, but got much new info for Deatons, Buhr, Riggs and Hicks
