This trip was to complete several of my travel goals. They are:
1. Visit all 50 U.S. states
2. Spend a night in two different cities in all 50 U.S. states -- still need a night in a second city in Alaska, probably Anchorage
3. Photograph all 50 U.S. state capitol buildings
4. Photograph the campus signs of all NCAA Division I schools (and then some for a total of 462 schools) -- still need three in California, two near Seattle and two in Anchorage
5. Visit at least 200 national park facilities -- the five visted on this trip gets me to 195. This spring I will pick up two more near Casper WY and Scottsbluff NE, leaving three.
Finally getting to Hawaii, the last of the 50 U.S. states for me to visit.
Oahu Island: Four nights spend in Honolulu, tour most of the island including the Pearl Harbor / USS Arizona / etc. site, and, photograph signs at the University of Hawaii
Kauai Island: Two nights in Koloa, tour most of the island, nothing on this island is on any of my goals lists
Hawaii Island: Three nights in Hilo, tour most of the island, four national parks (only two visited), Keck Observatory (can only visit the headquarters unless have a four-whell drive vehicle), and, do my bucket list item of riding a helicopter.
MISSED VISITING:
--actually visiting (vs. seeing from across the bay) the memorials for the USS Arizona and USS Missouri. The naval base itself is closed to non-personnel. They direct us to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial which is on the other side of the bay from the USS Arizona.
--a hula dance performance -- they are only certain evenings and none were when I was on the island, or, as in the case of the island of Hawaii, I would have to drive a couple of hours through windy mountainous roads in the night time darkness whcih is a bad idea in an unfamiliar place
--the west coasts of Oahu and Kauai -- rainy days prevented it
--Kaloko-Honokohau NHS -- bailed on the last afternoon after reading more about the park
--Pu'uhonua O H?naunau NHP -- bailed on the last afternoon after reading more about the park
OBSERVATIONS: Some observations made while traveling in this area:
- The state makes a really big deal of pedistrian crosswalks. The state marks them more dramatically than I have seen in any other state.
- The small towns I drove through seemed quite "dumpy". Vehicles (cars, trucks, boats, etc.) densely parked right off the roads and buildings looking rundown
- As I flew into Honolulu, I was noting the terrain. When the mountains are in view, the area seemed much like California with neighborhood after neighborhood of houses lined up and all looking the same. Once the mountains were out of view, then it looked like Miami or Phoenix. I was expecting it to look more tropical and "resorty".
- My impressions of Honolulu are quite unfavorable. Traffic seems as bad as any city on the U.S. mainland -- Boston, Los Angeles, New York. Reasons to live in Hawaii: temperatures rarely above 90 and rarely below 60, and, no snow. But other than that......?
- It seems that hotels and other buildings only have air conditioning but no heat. Because of that, I am always cold -- and I came to Hawaii to escape the cold of winter.
- Native Hawaiian music plays in many public places. While trying to get used to it, it sounds a bit like Native American music, and, popular music from the 1930's.
- I am surprised by how many young couples bring their under-a-year-olds to the beach.
- I am stunned at how very little that people wear on the beach. It seems we allow a much different dress code on beaches than for everywhere else. Shows how incredibly little time I spend at a beach where others are.
- Numerous acquainances asked me if I was going surfing or snorkling or swimming or take some boat tour. My reply each time was: I will fly over water and I will stand on a beach to view the water but have zero desire to get in, or on, the water. I leave those things to others who enjoy doing them.
- Interesting how many couples walk around wearing match tshirts.
- I note how often, when a couple is walking, that he is five to ten paces ahead of her rather than they walking side by side. People-watching, a favorite "sport' of mine, lets me notice these kinds of things.
- Oahu had a few roosters (which surprised me to learn they had any at all). However Kauai has thousands of them freely running around everywhere. They do their special call all day long vs. only at sunrise.
- The Big Island of Hawai'l has roosters too but only a few like Oahu has. Kauai is the domain of roosters.
- Like done for ice skating, there are judged competitions for hula. The dancing can get quite alaborate, have many people on stage moving in unison, and, singing Hawaiian songs
- Either my cold reduced my energy level more than I realized or I was getting into the slower, more laid back, lifestyle of Hawaii. I noticed I walked maybe 25% slower than I usually do, and was fine with that!
- Drivers on Oahu tend to drive, on average, about 10 MPH over the speed limit. On the other hand, drivers on both Kauai and Hawai'i tend to drive 10 MPH below the speed limit. That slower pace of life thing for non-Oahuians?
The Bests:
- Turtle Bay Resort on the northeast shore -- THIS is how I pictured hotels in Hawaii. Incredible setting. The north shore seems to have the best waves for surfing.
- Sunset a Koloa -- mostly because it was one of the few times while I was in Hawaii that the clouds did not totally dominate the sky
- Keck Observatory Headquarters -- since I have loved astronomy almost my entire life, certainly since age six
- Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site -- I look forward to sharing the story of this place with some back home
- Learning that there are hula contests -- AND, they are BIG deal!
- Helicopter tour around Hilo area -- it was my first ever helicopter ride, I can now scratch it from the Bucket List
The Worsts:
- Honolulu traffic
- Rainy days and cloudy days in "Paradise" -- of my ten days in Hawaii, most were cloudy and rainy. Two had total sunshine for even a few hours. Two other days had brief sunshine. SIx days of total clouds, usually accompanied with rain. Two days were heavy rain all day.
- Delta airline service
- Hertz Honolulu check-in service
- Coming down with a cold after only 32 hours in Hawaii. It later turned into an infection in both ears
- Kauai hula performers were no-shows -- I was looking forward to this dip into the culture
- Smacking the car into a lane-divider pole during very low visibiliity light
- Hawaiian ziplining experiences are all "tours" (multiple line runs that last for hours) -- I wanted just a simple 60-90 second run on a single line and am done with it.
The Totals:
- Miles Driven: 910 -- 152 on Oahu, 393 on Kauai and 265 on Hawai'i
- Driving: 20 hours in 10 days -- 3.5 on Oahu, 9.0 on Kauai and 7.5 on Hawai'i
- States: 1 -- Hawaii -- all 50 have now been visited by me
- Major Universities: 2 -- University of Hawaii-Manoa (Honolulu), University of Hawaii-Hilo
- Pictures Taken: 502 (and deleted 99 of them)
- National Parks: 3 new ones (to make 197 visited): Pearl Harbor National Memorial, VOlcanic, Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site (and missed two others)
- State Capitols: 1 -- this completes the project
