This island has most of the major and famous aspects of the state of Hawaii. It has the state capitol in the city of Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, the University of Hawaii and several well-known lookout areas. Mountains too.
Because of so much to seemingly see and do here, I planned four nights in Honolulu as my base. Driving distances are fairly short since the island is small.
To give an indication of traffic in Honolulu, I left the hotel just at sunrise on a Sunday. Despite just three or four other vehicles around me, it took nine minutes to go one mile. Why? Over a dozen traffic lights, each times to turn red when approached. And, they each stay red for well over 30 seconds.
Hawaii has very few miles of what could be called interstate. And, their speed limits are 55 mph. Most highways on Oahu are 35 mph or 45 mph. And the Hawaiians tend to drive fast.
To show how valuable real estate is on Oahu, when driving down the hightways, hardly a space is simply nature but have buildings of some sort. And, of course, each place has dozens of vehicles parked along the side of the road.
I was surprised to hear a couple of roosters at different points near the northeast shore. I don't tend to think of Hawaii are farm country!
Hawaii lacks good taste along the northeast shore area -- I saw THREE PT Cruisers, the ugliest car ever made.
I have been surprised by the number of tunnels that are part of the highways. And, they are fairly long ones.
Got to the northeast shore expecting to see the lighthouse that Google Maps said was there. No lighthouse. But, the area was spectacular with scenery. And, the incredible Turtle Bay Resort is there.
