This is THE city in the U.S. So many things to do and see. Someday I want to return
and spend several days on Manhattan Island and partake of many things this city has
to offer.
For this trip, I wanted to photograph the campus signs of several colleges:
New York University, Rockfeller University, Fordham University, Manhattan College
and Iona College (in Rochelle just north of here)/ Plus, Wagner College on Staten
Island, and, on Long Island, is St. John's University, St. Francis College and Long
Island Univrsity as well as Stony Brook University further east.
In addition to all the campus signs, I had the opportunity to meet up
with a long-time friend, and fellow natonal park lover, to visit the Hamilton Grange house.
For such a narrow strip of land, it is astounding how streets can go any directions
but the four main compass points. A person can turn a corner and be presented with three
different directions to go such as up a ramp, down a ramp or a surface street. Or, a
street that seemingly is to continue straight can split into three or four directions.
Thankfully the signs are English vs. French in Montreal. Many times, while heading to a
specific place, I had to double, or even triple, back after having made a wrong turn.
Also, in a second attempt in May, I wanted to visit the birthplace of Theodore
Roosevelt, a national park site. Still unsuccessful because the police had the block
barricaded for reasons unknown. Sigh!
I returned in late July of the same year to once again try to get to the
Theodore Roosevelt National Historic Park. I was able to FINALLY get to the block
where it is located. However, I had to park illegally for a couple of minutes while
I ran half a block to where the house is located in the middle of the block to
photograph the exterior of the building and the sign (which hardly resembles a
standard national park service sign). That was it. But I made it there.
Also while in town in July I photographed signs on more campuses: Long
Island University - Brooklyn, St. Francis, Wagner College and St. John College
both on Staten Island, Stony Brook, Hofstra and St. John's - Long Island. Then
met a friend at the Hamilton-Grange National Memorial Home. Afterwards, we have
lunch at a nearby restaurant called The Edge Harlem, Very popular place (waited
nearly an hour to get a seat in a small but very loud (conversations) place. In
fact, you had to practically yell to talk. My friend and I both LOVE our national
park system and have visited several together as well as dozens and dozens
of the on our own. This place was national park #190 for me.
