Three reasons to be here on this trip. One, to photograph the campus signs at
nearby New England College in Henniker. Two, to spend a night in a second town
of New Hampshire -- a travel goal is to spend a night in at least two towns for
every state, remaining are Rhode Island (second town), Alaska (second town), and,
Hawaii (yet to visit that state).
Third reason is to check out the town to see if this is a place I want to live in
retirement. New Hampshire is one of the very best tax-friendly states for retirees.
However, its winters are long (five months) and cold with LOTS of snow (over six feet
per winter)). Ideally, I could live here mid-April to mid-October, then move to somewhere
such as Tallahassee Florida for the winter months. That way, I can continue to do family
history research in New England.
After spending three hours driving around Concord and looking at various things, I found
that I really like the town and could easily live there -- IF -- and that is a BIG --I-F--,
I never had to leave town. Even at 9:00 am on a weekday there were very few cars around
on the streets, including downtown. I was stunned.
Driving to Boston should take and hour and a half tops but with traffic, especially traffic jams,
that time can expand to upwards of three hours. In fact, after
leaving Concord heading back to Boston, I encountered a traffic jam a few miles short of the
NH - MA border that delayed me about an hour. THAT was the final straw that told me that I
have ZERO DESIRE to live with that type of lifestyle -- sitting in traffic so often. A person
could lose hundreds of hours of their life to traffic james. So if I want to do further
family history research in Boston, I will have to fly to town as a visitor.
