Corvallis OR
Eugene OR
Portland OR
Mostly, I was SOooo GLAD to get out of Oregon. I let out a BIG Whoopie when I crossed the
Columbia River into the state of Washington. I have been in this states a few times now and
simply would never want to live there. I don't even want to visit here again. Highway system
is terrible. Cannot get anywhere quick. Hundreds of hundreds of semi-trailer trucks covering
the roads and they are required to go ten MPH slower than cars. Interstate 5 is still what I
call a parking lot. Just get into the leftmost lane and stay there and keep up the speed of
the drivers in front. Speed limits are a mixture of 55, 60 and 65. Drivers cannot pump their
own gas, an attendant must do it and s/he is busy running around to from 5 to 10 customers at
once, so service is slow. And of course the pesky forest fires that were over much of the
state and covering areas with smoke. My planned route got detoured because one highway was
closed due to the fires.
First time to visit this town. Came here to photograph the campus signs of Oregon
State University.
A few years ago I visited the University of Oregon here to photograph the campus signs.
But at that time, I could not find the signs. So had to come back again although I really
would like to have avoided this city, for three reasons. One, it was a slow, long mountainous
drive to get here. Two, it meant I had to drive many more miles on I-5 north. I learned
the last time I was in Oregon that I-5 is basically bumper-to-bumper traffic in both lanes
through the entire state -- California border to Washington border. And, three, in Oregon,
it is a state law that people are not allowed to pump their own gas, a station employee must
do that.
Portland is a beautiful city and I had not originally planned to visit here. Then I
realized that Portland State University is here. While I was looking up where its
campus signs are located, Later still I learned there also is a University of Portland. So, two
campuses to visit to photograph their campus signs. The signs for Portland State
were really hard to locate but I finally found them.
Oregon indeed is a beautiful state in many places with the mountains and forests.
But just not worth being here, at least to me. #1 thing I judge a place by is: how easy and
quickly can I get around on the roads.
