One of my more recent goals during traveling is to photograph the sign at all of the major
U.S. colleges and universities. If I had started this goal in 2004, I would have gotten
over 50 more than I now have. Three universities in Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University in
Stillwater, University of Oklahoma in Norman, and, Oral Roberts University in Tulsa.
This trip was going to the first two since they were on my way to my first main destination
of Big Bend National Park. I have seen the football teams of these two universities play in
Manhattan KS against the KState Wildcats.
Stillwater is a tough town to drive in. Must stop at almost every intersection for either a
stop sign of the perfectly timed red lights that turn red as you approach them from just
leaving the last light in which you had to stop. Sixth Street was the worst.
Norman and the highway department made it incredibly tough to get to the campus of the
University of Oklahoma. First, the exit was a narrow lane with cones or barrels on both
sides. Then, when I get off the ramp and onto the road needed (Lindsey Rd), it was blocked
for the direction I needed to go. I ended up on some entrance ramp going the wrong way.
After telling the GPS to detour me, I ran into another barricaded road. So detour #2 was
requested. That one, because of a strange turn missed, I ended up going the wrong way
down another highway ramp, but this time on purpose so I could turn where I was supposed
to turn. Getting out of town was a trick too. But I made it. And all this just before the
sunrise.
