One of my more recent goals during traveling is to photograph the sign at all of the major
U.S. colleges and universities. That is around 200 of them. To get all of them in a 300-mile
radius of Kansas City, several weekend trips were taken. This is to record the results of
those weekend trips with the colleges in Arkansas.
One of the two longer-than-expected stay was in Siloam Springs. Just as I was ready to leave
town (and even wrote down my travel log entry for it), I had a flat tire. That is when I
discovered that the car really has nothing for a flat tire. It comes with a little kit
(and no real instructions for what to do with it) that is supposed to patch the hole but then
says to go no further than three miles on the patched tire. So I called my AAA (member for 36 years)
roadside service. It took a while for them to figure out where I was and how to handle me. A guy with
a tow truck appeared 40 minutes later (he was born and raise in Siloam Springs). Meanwhile, the AAA
lady was trying to find me one of their approved tire replacement places. None for about 100 miles in
any direction. She said my membership covers the first three miles for free then it is $3.00 per mile
after that. That tow could have been over $300! I used mny GPS to find a local tire place then called
them. It was 1-1/2 miles from the university. So I got a free tow there. And that place had my tire
replaced in 20 minutes. A 2-1/2 inch long half inch wide piece of medal was buried in my tire. I kept
that as a souviner.
Interestingly, Oral Roberts University in Tulsa and John Brown University in Siloam Springs AR, about 100
miles east of Tulsa, both have the school mascot of The Golden Eagles.
