I came here to see Ft. Stanwix National Site. It counts towards my goal of
visiting 100 national parks. Howver, it was quite chilly when I was there
wearing only a short sleeve shirt and it was raining and I did not want to
get the camera wet, so I took photos of the fort from the visitor center.
I learned several new things about history. This fort was used from the times
of the French and Indian War (aka. The Seven Year War) until just before the
Civil War. It had several locations in the area. It would be destroyed by
enemy troops then rebuilt nearby. This area was a central point for trading
routes as well as the Six Tribes Nation of American Indians met in this area.
The ranger was very informative and quite fun to have a conversation with. He
is one who enjoys sharing what he has learned and probably has never met a
stranger. And, he was familiar with the KC area having served in the military
and visited four of the bases on both the Missouri and Kansas sides.
What I really liked about the visitor center exhibit is that they wrote the
story of the fort from the standpoint of each of them: a military person,
a fur trader, a woman that was trying to raise a family nearby, and an
American Indian woman who was basically the den mother for her tribe.
They each witnessed the events around the fort from their own perspective.
Very well done!
