This place is at the extreme southeast end of Long Island. I wanted to come here just
to see what it is like. There is a lighthouse there. Based on the heavy traffic just
getting to the place (except for the last 15 miles), I expected lots of people to be
there. But, the lighthouse (actually part of a park) is still closed for the winter
so there were only a few other people there. Nice.
Road construction along the two-lane highway to the park (the last 15 miles which
mostly is 55 mph after doing 30 mph and 40 mph for sooooo many miles to the west
of this point) meant one-way traffic so the other way stopped for five minutes or
so. The road sections they had already fixed were quite smooth, especially when
compared to most of the highways in the state.
What really surprised me was a city bus ran all the way out to the town of Montauk.
Nice.
The room at the Hyatt I stayed at in Riverhead was very nice, the nicest one I
had the entire time I was in the state. Too bad I got to be in it just 12 hours
from check-in to check-out. But, had to be on the road early early early to get
on the west side of Manhattan Island before that 10 - 15 mile backup got going.
