I had never been to Pittsburgh before except for changing planes once a few decades ago.
In the early 1990's I worked with someone who grew up in Pittsburgh and often talked about
how great the city is. So towards my goal of visiting all major US cities, I came here.
I really did not have anything specific to visit here except the Point State Park where
the three rivers come together, thus, the name for the stadium in town.
There was really nothing special I wanted to see here. Guess that is why I had never made
it here before. Since I was here, I visited the University of Pittsburgh. The area it is
in has a really strange street system. They run every which way and many are one-way plus
some are really narrow with cars parked on both sides of the street and the driving cars
pass each other by inches. I kept waiting for our side mirrors to collide. When a larger
vehicle (e.g. truck, van, ambulance, etc.) is coming the opposite way, you learn to duck
in a street parking space until they pass.
I made four attempts to get down to The Point, the famous spot where the three rivers come
together. A fort is there. Twice I ended up on the south side of the rivers via a bridge-under-a-bridge
with the strangest set of merging-and-converging lanes I have ever seen anywhere. Even Manhattan
Island is not this weird. The other two times I ended up on the north side of the river but never
did see a way to get to the fort and The Point. I took photos once from the south side of the river
and called it Good, and gave up.
