This park is in west central Oregon (north of Klamath Falls). The original plan was to detour
here while traveling south along the coast from Seattle. However, with the changed plans
because of the deer strike, I needed to make two loops from Boise so I could return there
May 08 to get my car back and return the rental car. So I decided to visit Crater National
park on the way to Sacramento, then down the coast from there. I got here from Boise by
going through the town of Burns then on some back roads that my Garmin GPS knew about. Went
through the national forests of Fremont and Winema.
Crater Lake is beautiful. I got to see it in snow too. The north entrance to the park was
closed because snow still covers the road there (see photographs). The south entrance road
was clear but the hill to climb to see the lake was snow covered (again, see photos). And
as you can see in the photos, snow was still quite high along the roads leading to the lake.
What I found interesting about the area around Crater Lake is that there is a reddish pink
dust and/or gravel along the edge of all the roads.
When I was by the lake, a mother and two teenage daughters were also there and the mother was
taking her girls' photos. I offered to take all three's photo. So they offered to take mine.
They were in coats and freezing (they said they were from Phoenix) and I am standing there
comfortable in just a long sleeve shirt. Cold is relative.
