Around 9:15 am Mountain Time on Saturday April 27, while driving along highway 20 about 40 miles east of
Mountain Home, Idaho (on the way to Craters of the Moon National Park), a deer suddenly ran from behind
a small hill next to the side of the road. It happened so fast I had no time to react or think. I barely
even got to hit the brakes before striking the deer. Very weird sensation that continued to replay in my
head over and over for days. Only time I have ever hit a deer. The car front end was smashed in and the
radiator was bend and probably developed a small leak (something was dripping underneath). No human
physical injuries, fortunately, and hopefully the deer did not suffer. After tying down the hood (the
Boy Scout "Be Prepared" in me had rope in the trunk), the car managed to drive the nearly two hours back
to Boise. Then the fun began with calling the insurance company and cancelling various reservations
already made for the next few days.
