We drove on Highway 2 from St. Johnsbury VT into New Hampshire. Then we went north around the
White Mountains National Forest to get to Berlin. After leaving that area, we went further
north to near the Canadian Border while driving alongside the Androscoggin River.
The drive on Highway 16 was quite scenic with the tree filled mountains all around and a river. The river
is shallow in many places as the rocks are often visible and a fisherman was standing in the middle at
another point. Several places had the tall pine trees growing right at the edge of the river.
Highway 26 ran from Error NH to Colebrook NH. This 25 mile stretch had the mountains and trees along
with several lakes. We missed seeing them but there reportedly are some of the most scenic geological
formations (called "notches") nearby as well as a formation named "Cathedral Spires". Halway across
the stetch of highway, near the down of Dixville Notch, is a huge resort called Balsams. The room rates
there are from $275 to $600 per night. The AAA book lists over about two dozen activities at the resort
including the most popular, skiing. Sitting on the hilly edge of a large lake, the place was quite
picturesque. We were surprised at what a large number of private and commercial places had "For Sale" signs.
