Newbury is a small town off the Interstate 89. The town is on the south end of Lake Sunapee.
One of the numerous properties on the quite large lake shore is the Fells Historic Garden Estate. The estate
was originally owned by John M. Jay. Mr. Jay was a private secretary for President Lincoln and
served as secretary of state for both Presidents McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt.
The flowers were numerous, abundant, beautiful and smelled great. Sherry tasted a couple of the wild
raspberries and said they were delicious and sweet. The flying bugs followed us everywhere except by
the breezy lake shore. The trails through the woods were fun -- you must have good walking shoes and
strong ankles for this hike because the terrain is never smooth or flat. Tree roots and half-buried
stones fill the pathways. Well worth the effort, though. As with so many things in New Hampshire
before July 1, the house itself was closed.
Everytime Sherry sees an inviting lake or stream, she has an urge to take off her shoes and wade
out into the water. However, the water was too cool and no towel was available to dry the feet.
Lake Sunapee would have been a great place to walk along the shore in the water because it was
shallow and covered in smooth pebbles.
