Acoma Indian Reservation is about 55 miles west of Albuquerque, NM. Get to it from I-40 exit 108 then south 12 miles.
Unusual rock formations surround the Acoma Reservation.
The San Esteban Del Rey Mission was built from 1629 - 1641. The Catholic Church was built after the Spanish Conquistadors took over the Indian nation. The timber (interior roof) were manually hauled thirty miles from Mt. Taylor. The Acoma do not allow any pictures to be taken inside their church.
The homes are all made from materials found around the reservation. They are replastered every 5 - 10 years with mud. They have no electricity, no running water, no telephones and no satellite dishes.
When the Spanish Conquistadors were looking for The Golden City, they thought they had spotted it in the distance when they saw Sky City. In reality what they saw was the unusual quartz material used to make windows. The one pictured here is the only remaining one in Sky City.
Women make their bread (30 - 45 minutes) in these special bread ovens outside their homes.
Our tour guide, a KU graduate, has countless fascinating stories to tell about his people. At first, his speech pattern seems rather unusual and difficult to listen to. However, after about ten minutes, you ignore the manner of message and begin to hear the message. Then, this guy is tremendously interesting and very knowledgeable. And, he loves to talk!
