I had never heard of this place until I started looking at what national park sites were near my route. Thus, this place goes towards my new goal of visiting 150 national park sites. This one makes #122.

The terrain in this park is rather plain looking, like desert wasteland good for little use. There was some guy who had a ranch there but no clue what he was ranching there. It was quite a drive to get back to the visitors center. To the west of it was the southern end of Lake Meredith, the adjacent national park site whose headquarters are in the town of Fritch TX. However, at Alibates, the lake is totally dried up, it being the furthest, thus, shallowest, from the dam on the north end.

I read that there are ranger guided tours of the actual quarries area to see some rock that is in the process of being quarried. Rather unexciting. I took photos of the quarry area from the road, then left.

The drive from Clovis NM to Amarillo TX to get here was interesting. There were railroad tracks paralleling the highway. I saw a number of trains along my drive. And many times there were regular railroad trucks or vans parked alongside the trains that were stopped, as if they were servicing them. And ahead of the trains I saw a crew that appeared to be grooming the gravel that underlies the tracks. And then along a ten mile or so stretch there were thousands of railroad ties stacked at various points along the tracks, as if waiting for a crew to come by to use them as either additions or replacements, Lastly, as per some warning signs because the area is do dry, I saw some dust storms/clouds, usually off the highway but twice across the highway. All of these things I never see in the KC area.
