Because of an obituary from 1912 that I read in the 1980's, I decided to stop here to do some family history research. I had slim hopes of finding anything, but since I was in the area then.....

What specifically brought me here is that the obituary in Memphis TN of my great grandmother (died June 1912) said "Utica please copy". Neither me nor my mother nor her sister knew of a Utica connection. Searching through the two 1912 Utica newspapers proivided any information on g-g-gma (but did turn up some fun reading!). However, the city directories of 1906 and 1912 showed that there were around ten or so people living in Utica that were of the last name of Carey (my g-g-gma's married name). So apparently her husband's family was in the Utica area. No known connection of them but at least I now have a pretty good idea why. There was also a mention in the obituary of a family connection to South Bend, IN (I have yet to ever go there). My mother did recall that her oldest brother often went to South Bend to visit family there.
