Spense's History of Hickman County Tennessee has the following: on page 275: Near the western portion of Brier Pond, Valentine Flowers, father of William, located in 1825. Valentine was a Primitive Baptist preacher, and in a church house, which stood on his lands, Liberty Church was organized on June 1, 1827. Two Baptist preachers who signed the minister of the day's proceedings were Willis Dotson and Elias Deaton. The church was afterwards moved from the Flower's place to the Sulfur Fork of the Beaverdam Creek, and in 1853 it was moved to it's present site. on page 432: 1825 - Elias Deaton was a magistrate selected by the Legislature of the state. on page 143: In 1858, about 3/4 mile from Shady Grove on Buck Branch, William Brinkle stabbed and killed Elijah Deaton at the home of Deaton's daughter, who was a widow. Brinkle was never arrested.
Research
,
One descendant of the Deatons believes the Deatons may have come from Kentucky to Tennessee while building the railroad. In the list of marriage bonds for Montgomery county NC there is one for Elias M. Deaton and Elizabeth Yarborough dates 1852-10-04 (and witnessed by a Jonathan Yarborough). That date is over 30 years too late for this Elias and Elizabeth whose first child was born in 1820. Also, an Elias M. Deaton was a soldier in the Civil War in 1863 when he died of disease at age 35. Fold3.com has his military service records to show this. This unfortunate soldier is likely the one who married Elizabeth Yarborough in 1852 and he died just over ten years later. Thus, their just might be two sets of Elias Deatons marrying an Elizabeth Yarborough 30 ot 50 years apart, or, researchers are assigning records to the wrong people.
