General

· Littleberry's son Benjamin said that Littleberry and Christina has a daughter (other than Elizabeth Jane) that died in infancy.

In 1862 Littleberry wrote a 128-page book, published in Chicago, titled "Eleven Months of Exile Life in Southern Illinois". The only known copy of it is in the Illinois State Historical Society Library in Springfield. On the title page, Littleberry identifies himself as a minister from Tennessee. · In the preface, he says that the purpose of his writing the book was to show the "true cause of the great southern rebellion and it's outrageous tyrannical character". He also hopes · to "expose the blind partyism" which exists in the country and caused the rebellion. And finally, he hopes to be the instrument for revival in southern Illinois. Littleberry also wanted a record of his life in southern Illinois so that his family knew what happened to him since he could not get mail delivered from the Union state of Illinois to the Confederate state of Tennessee. · In the book, Littleberry says his friends call him "Barry". He says that his father was Elias (of · Hickman county Tennessee) and that the Deatons in Williamson county Illinois are his second and third cousins. [FindAGrave.com shows about 200 people named Deaton are buried in the county]. Two of them were William Deaton and James Deaton. Littleberry said he'd met them thirty years prior. William's wife was over fifty years old. There was also a George Deaton, a Dixon Deaton and a John Deaton. Littleberry also said that "several of my kin, the Deatons," were in Colonel Logan's 31st · regiment. · Another Deaton cousin was Joseph Deaton and his daughter Polly Ann. Later in the fall of 1861, William Deaton was near death. · Without saying so directly, Littleberry revealed quite a bit about his own character and personality while writing his book. He was against wearing of jewelry and fancy clothing. He was against alcohol, tobacco, and, swearing. He liked to express himself with poems which he wrote himself. He strongly believed in his God and in his own · place in life which was to tell his fellow man about God. · Littlebury was a pessimist and saw the worst in most situations and people. But he praised and respected many persons he met, particularly family members and those who helped him. · Littleberry was against all fighting and quarreling. He also had a disdain for lying and partisan politics. He believed in having a respect for all religions. He also disapproved of nicknames yet he referred to his own wife Christina · as "Chrisse". Littleberry was quite knowledgeable about current events in the world. He also had a large vocabulary as was evident in his writing. · Littleberry had an interesting method for quieting his crying children. When a child reached age ten months, he would "slap them a little with my hand to make them hush crying". But he admitted that some children do not learn to quit crying at age ten months but they did learn it by age twelve months. He also went on to say that he · permitted them to cry when they were ill but never while they were well. Littleberry also said he rarely had to discipline his nine children after they reach age twelve years. His means was to have them "fear their parents". His children knew of his three main rules: never talk insulting or saucy to him, obey his orders, and, leave his possessions alone. · Apparently Littleberry lived in other countries for a while, probably serving as a missionary, as he stated how he had seen · parents in other countries raise their children. · In volume I of JoAnn Ladd Hatfield's "Saga of Southern Illinois" it tells of several Deatons buried in Henshaw Cemetery. This cemetery is located southwest of Stonefort in the southeastern corner of Williamson county. They are: Myrtle born 02-07-1913 died 02-22-1914, Lelia born 07-10-1907 died 04-04-1920, Thomas born 10-11-1836 died 12-18-1912 and his wife Sarah born 05-28-1836, James born 1848 died 1930 and his wife Paulina · born 1849 died 1930.
