Gilbert's Ohio house was acquired by the family of his niece, Mrs. Hattie Searls Eastwood and her daughter Anna. In her 1934 letter Anna said that her family had made several additions and improvements to the then 100 year old house but that the original wood floor was still a part of the house.

Illinois became the twenty first state in 1818. Winnebago county was formed in 1836 from parts of several older counties. In 1855 the railroad linking Chicago to the east coast was completed.
