Events
Birth
: 1822-10-14, Virginia, [birth state gotten from the census records 1860 thru 1880]
Census
: 1850 , Age:27y 2m 18d, ?Missouri, Role:census federal, --- unable to find ancestor Thomas Melvin on 1850 census living anywhere in the U.S. At age 31 in 1853 he married Elizabeth. Unknown where he had been since he left his birth state of (West) Virginia. The most likely states he would have lived in at that time would likely be one of Virginia, Pike county Missouri (although a search of the Pike county Grantor and Grantee index books 1847-1855 did not list him at all), Indiana or Ohio. Per the censuses for 1860 through 1880, plus his death place, he lived in Indiana and Ohio much of his adult life. The 1850 census search in familysearch.org returns a Tom Melvin age 25 living in Accomack county Virginia. That Tom was a sailor/fisherman living with a Lydia age 21. The familysearch.org profile for this Tom says he is Tom Jr. and his father Tom Sr. was also born in Accomack. In Clark county Ohio are two Melvin families as next door neighbors: Silas (age 69 b.VA wife Sarah age 50) and John (age 35 b.VA wife Caroline age 30). And in the Pleasant Township of Clark county Ohio is the Silas Melvin family with Silas age 69 farmer born in West] Virginia, Sarah 09000018U34 age 50 born in Virginia, daughter A.C. age 23 born in Virginia, son Samuel age 18 farmer born in Ohio, Susan age 15 born in Ohio, and, son F.H. [??] age 13 born in Ohio. Since a "Tom Melvin" is already in Accomack county Virginia on the 1850 ceneus, that likely means that the Melvins on the 1830 and 1840 censuses there are not the father of ancestor Thomas Melvin.

Research ,

TO FIND: Parents (born in North Carolina per 1880 ceneus for Thomas, lived in Virginia or West Virginia where Thomas born), 1850 Census and Immigrant Ancestors

Timeline for Thomas (his first 30 years are a mystery):
- 1822 - born in Virginia, possibly in Clarke county (per the mention of Clarke county in his obituary) to parents who were born in North Carolina (per 1880 census entry for Thomas). Unknown if Thomas had any siblings.
- 1822-1853 - as a young adult, he likely lived in any of Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and/or Missouri and eventually somewhere met and married widow Elizabeth (Riggs) Mitchell who had a young daughter Jennie, both having been born in Missouri
.........Based on all Melvins in Virginia (including the future West Virginia counties) found in the 1830 and 1840 census (when Thomas would have been, respectively, around age 8 and 18), just two possible fathers appear:
.........- Samuel Melvin of Jefferson county West Virginia (it is the most northeastern county of WV) 1830: 1 male age 5-9, 2 males in their 20's, 1 male in his 60's, and, 1840: 1 male under age 5, 1 male age 5-9, 1 male age 15-19, 1 male in his 40's
.........- John Melvin Sr. of Jefferson county West Virginia (it is the most northeastern county of WV) 1830: 1 male age 5-9, 2 males in his 30's, and, 1840: 1 male age 15-19, 1 male in his 30's, 1 in his 70's
.........There are three adult male Melvins in the 1840 census who have a male child around age 18 that Thomas would have been but they appear in only on the 1840 census:
.........- Thomas Melvin of Accomack county Virginia (on the Delaware peninsula) 1 male age 10-14, 1 male age 15-19, 1 male in his 40's. He might be the father of the married Tom Melvin, age 25, sailor, on the 1850 census in Accomack county.
.........- James Melvin of Brooke county West Virginia (northernmost county of WV) 2 males under age 5, 1 male age 5-10, 1 male age 15-19, 1 male in his 30's
.........- William Melvin of Brooke county West Virginia (northernmost county of WV) 1 male age 10-14, 1 male age 15-19, 1 male in his 50's
.........The obituary of Thomas Melvin said he was from 'Clarke county' [no state name given]. A manual search through all Tax Lists of Clarke county Virginia from 1842 to 1850 found ZERO families named Melvin.
- 1850 - unable to find Thomas on the 1850 census. There is a Tom Melvin age 25, married and living in Accomack county Virginia. The father of this Tom likely is the above-mentioned Thomas Melvin of Accomack county.
- 1853 - marries, at age 31, the widow Mrs. Eliza (Riggs) Mitchell in PIke county Missouri (per marriage certificate that spelled his last name 'Melvil'). Eliza has a five year old daughter from her previous marriage to the late Robert Mitchell.
- 1855 - birth of daughter Alice Kate, the first child of Thomas and Elizabeth, in Cedarville, Greene county, Ohio (per 1901 Canadian census and estimated from U.S. censuses 1860, 1870, 1880)
- 1860 - living in Cedarville, Greene county, Ohio (per census)
- 1862 - birth of daughter Ida in Cedarville, Greene county, Ohio (per Wilson family bible)
- 1870 - living in Attica, Fountain county, Indiana (per 1870 census), at some point in the 1870's he moved a bit south to Terre Haute (see below)
- 1880 - living in Terre Haute, Vigo county, Indiana (per 1880 census)
- 1884 - living in Terre Haute, Vigo county, Indiana when his daughter Ida comes to town to be married to Robert Wilson in the home of Thomas and Elizabeth (per three newspaper articles). At some point in the next few years Thomas moves his family back to Greene county, Ohio and lives in Xenia
- 1885 - Elizabeth's daughter, and Thomas' step-daughter, Jennie Mitchell, dies in Xenia, Greene county, Ohio (per FindAGrave). Thomas and Elizabeth might have moved back to Xenia by this time.
- 1890 - In January Ida (Melvin) Wilson and two of her children come from Kansas City to visit her parents in Xenia, Greene county, Ohio (per newspaper article)
- 1890 - In February, Thomas, age 68, died at his home in Xenia, Greene county, Ohio and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery (per obituary)
- 1890 - In May, Ida (Melvin) Wilson and her two children return home to Kansas City (per newspaper article) and sometime in 1890 Elizabeth (Riggs) Melvin moves to Ontario to live with the family of her other daughter, Alice Kate (Melvin) Burns (per Canadian 1891 census)

Some questions about Thomas:
1. Widow Elizabeth (Riggs) Mitchell was a widow in 1850 in Lincoln county Missouri (per the census) at some point between 1850 and 1853 met and married Thomas K. Melvin in Pike county Missouri. How Thomas came to Pike county is undetermined since nothing is known of his life before his marriage to Eliza except that he was born in Virginia to parents who were born in North Carolina (per censuses 1860-1880). Thomas appeared nomadic since he was never in the same place two consecutive census years. At search in the Pike county courthouse in Bowling Green for the years 1847 through 1853 showed that Thomas Melvin neither bought nor sold any land in Pike county.
2. Based on his obituary, Thomas likely married only once, and that was after age 30. No records (i.e. tax, land transactions) have been found with him as a young man in his 20's in northern Virginia or what later became eastern West Virginia)
3. Why did Thomas and Elizabeth and their daughter Ida and her husband Robert Wilson move back to Greene county Ohio by 1890 where Thomas died in 1890? May because Elizabeth's daughter Jennie was ill (and died in 1885). Sometime around the death of Thomas, Ida and Robert moved to Kansas City. After Thomas died, Elizabeth moved to Ontario to live with her daughter Alice Kate Burns since Elizabeth was otherwise had no family in Greene county Ohio.
4. Thomas was possibly born in, or later lived to, the part of Virginia that became the state of West Virginia in 1863. That maybe could explain why Thomas fought in the Civil War on the side of the Union.
5. Melvin brothers John (1795-1833) and Thomas (1797-1874) were both married in Jefferson county Virginia. John married Nancy Snyder (1804-1834) in 1827 Oct.25 and Thomas married Mary Engle (1806-1864) in 1828 Sep.11. Both marriages occurred after ancestor Thomas K. Melvin was born in Virginia. The parents of John and Thomas were Thomas Melvin (1768-1831) of Virginia and Mary Sly (1769-1841) of Pennsylvania.

One possible couple sometimes given in some sources as the parents of Thomas is Silas Melvin and his second wife Mary L. Martin. Silas and Mary, according to the entry for Thomas on the 1880 census, were born in North Carolina. However, their son Thomas appears in FamilySearch.org with a very different family from ancestor Thomas.
A search in FamilySearch.org for someone with the last name of Melvin born 1785-1805 in North Carolina and lived in Virginia in 1822 and had a son Thomas got ZERO hits!
In book "Marriages and Death Notices from Torchlight - 1844 to 1870" it mentions a Reverend James W Melvin who died Jun.16, 1862 in Cedarville, Ohio at the home of Robert Murdock. Is he any relation to Thomas?
