General

Catherine was twice widowed in a span of ten years · · A chart or diagram followed by some official documents that help show how the Grogans and Kuhns and Careys are related to the Deatons. It is all through Catherine (Dowling) (Grogan) Carey who was the mother of Anna Mae (Carey) Deaton. This also helps explain how Utica (Oneida county) New York ties into the Carey-Deaton family. · · Catherine Dowling and John Carey as listed as the parents of groom John Carey (who is marrying Mrs. Elizabeth Ritter) of Buffalo, Utica, New York 1912. This is likely not a child of the ancestors since this child was born years before Catherine and John married.

Catherine's granddaughter Addie Linda thought that Catherine's maiden name was DAUGHLING [actually, DOWLING]. She also said that Catherine had a sister that lived in New York, possibly Utica [see below for more]. Catherine, according to her granddaughter Kathryn Kuhn Henson, was from Cork county Ireland. Kathryn said that whenever she would ask her mother, Julia Theresa, about her mother Catherine, Julia would reply that Catherine did not talk much about her ancestors. But Julia did · remember her mother saying that she, Catherine, would walk along the seashore in Cork county with her governess. Kathryn did not know why Catherine came to America. Kathryn remembers her mother, Julia, telling her that her mother, Catherine, told her that two brothers with the surname of Grogan, one being the first husband of Catherine, came to America and eventually to Memphis and they married sisters. Kathryn had an old copy of an obituary of Catherine Carey dated Oct.18, 1983 in · Memphis. She quoted it word for word. It said that Catherine was at the home of her son-in-law, William Kuhn, when she died at age 50 on 06-20-1912 in Memphis. Funeral services were to be held at St. Patrick's Church. The article said for the South Bend (St. Joseph) Indiana and Utica (Oneida) New York newspapers to copy. Kathryn did not know why Utica was mentioned [likely because her son, John Carey Jr., was married in Utica in 1912] but that South Bend was mentioned because Jack · Carey had family in that area. Kathryn said that the Augustine family there were relatives of Jack's. Pat (Deaton) Wilson remembers that her oldest brother, Charles, made trips to South Bend often to visit the relatives that lived there. Pat was uncertain how they were related. She also remembers the Gilliam family was there and that they worked for the Studebaker car company.
